The design of the following sketches is to ren-der more familiar and life-like some of the scenesof the Bible. This, I know, is a difficult task, notonly from the disposition of men to look at thingssacred less naturally than on the common eventsof life, but from the inability of the writer to findwords that shall bring the scenes he would de-scribe, home to the feelings, without shocking hisown and the readers sensibilities by too familiarphrases. Yet, unless they cease to become distantvisions to us, we shall never appreciate the displayswhich God has made of himself to man. TheBible is a book of general principles and outlinesketches. To elevate and extend to their full ap-plication the former, has been the work of the reli-gious teacher from the time of Christ till now—-while the filling up of the latter, has been neglectedas impossible or useless.
