If thecrystals be collected and ig-nited on platinum foil, oxalic acid is decomposed, andcarbonate of lime left; the subsequent addition of dilutenitric acid dissolves the residue with effervescence. This is by far the most satisfactory process for thedetection of oxalate of lime, and, although it re-quires a little tact, still, after some trials, it can readilybe performed in a very few minutes. But even thislittle waste of time may be avoided, by placing a dropof the lowermost stratum of the urine on a plate ofglass, placing over it a fragment of thin glass or mica,and then submitting it to the microscope : the crystalsdiffused through the fluid becoming very beautifullydistinct (123).
