The West was fullof these vicious and irresponsible men, who, under a leader ofcourage and brains, would unite to prey on and murder rich andpoor alike. They could skulk in the depths of the woods, anddash out upon their victims, and after gratifying their murderousdesigns, they would flee to their homes and lie in concealmenttill some new exploit would reveal theirlurking place. Probably the best organizedand most reckless of these bands was ledby Colonel John S. Mosby, whose daringdeeds made his name a terror. His raidswere remarkable for their boldness and suc-cess.
