After the enamel has been removed by cleavage to thepoint where the margin is to be laid, the wall must becompleted by cutting the enamel in an entirely differentway. Planing or Shaving Enamel.—In this manner of cuttingenamel the tissue is removed without reference to the roddirection, and without, injury to its structure (Figs. 36, 37,and 38). The chisel is used like the blade of a plane. Thecutting edge is placed against the surface with the shaft ofthe instrument almost parallel to it, and the tissue is shavedaway. In this way the rods that have been cracked apart 76 RELA TION OF STRUCTURE TO CUTTING OF ENAMEL by the cleavage are removed, and the walls arranged interms of its structural elements so as to gain the requiredstrength of margin.
