The war memorial in the small town of Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula on New Zealand's South Island. The memorial was unveiled on the 12th March, 1922. It commemorates not only the men of Akaroa who fell in the Great War but also those who came from the adjacent Banks Peninsula. Its design is based uopn a Gothic Pavillion. It is one of a number of memorials throughout New Zealand dedicated to the large numbers of young men who went half way across the world " to fight for King and Country." It also includes the name of those men who died in the South African war and latterly those who died in World War memorial was badly damaged in the Darfield earthquake of 2010. It was restored and strengthened, new paths added as was a wall shown on the 1920s plan but never built!
