Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, born Haruo, was the 3rd shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, and the third son of the second shogun Ashikaga Yoshiakira. He became shogun at the age of ten. He was the first person of the samurai class to host a reigning emperor at his private estate in 1381. In 1392, he ended the Nanboku-cho imperial schism that had plagued politics for over half a century, and retired from public office in 1395 to become a monk.
