Symptoms.—Herpes, ulcerations of the non-malignant kind andinflammatory fissures or cracks in the lip belong to medicine. Epi-thelioma of the lower, however, is so common an affection, especiallyamong men, that it deserves special attention at this point. It is pos-sible that smoking a clay pipe and similar long continued irritationsmay be factors in the causation of this malignant disease. The upperlip is occasionally the seat of epithelioma. At first the variation fromhealth in the tissues is so slight that it is overlooked; but after a timethe patient notices a small hard nodule, which subsequently ulcera
