PLATE XV—Northern Propyl^a and Well The Great Theatre situated to the south of the precinctwas built about the year 450 by Polykleitos, the architectof the Tholos. Pausanias, who was a great traveller, tells us itwas the most interesting of all the theatres existing in his time,and to-day any one who is familiar with the theatres of Greeceand the Greek colonies will say that this is more impressivethan any of the others. The Koilon or auditorium consisted offifty-five rows of marble seats, with twenty-four lines of space for the chorus is, according to the ancient system, Lib.
