In spite of the disadvantages noted above there are undoubtedlya great many cases where concrete construction would prove to beentirely satisfactory for the suspension of boilers and we believethat it might be quite generally employed for the purpose if thisfact were more fully appreciated. With this idea in mind w^e havetherefore had prepared some simple designs to cover the construc-tion of concrete beams and columns for the more usual sizes ofhorizontal tubular boilers. Figure i shows the typical design for 132 THE LOCOMOTIVE. [January, 5enf-up batrs t>ars U-ofirrups spaced IZ (Spart. It has been the aim to make the de-signs as simple as possible so that no complicated forms will berequired; square columns have been used and the beams have aplain rectangular cross-section so that the forms will consist practi-cally of two square vertical boxes connected together by a hori-zontal box open on top. For the support of a single boiler thebeams are of the same width as the columns but for a battery oftwo boilers it has been found advisable to make the beams twoinches wider than the columns in each case. The forms for thebeams and columns should be completely finished before startingto place the concrete. The footings for the columns may be madein advance, thus providing a suitable support for the forms, but itshould be noted that the vertical reinforcing bars in the columnsshould exten
