FRENCH CONGO - 1892: An 2 centimes brown on buff postage stamp depicting couple of ancient god and goddess as allegory "Navigation and Commerce". It was designed by Louis-Eugene Mouchon. France began issuing stamps printed with the territory name in 1892 as part of the Navigation and Commerce issue. A series of common postage due stamps was issued beginning in 1884, with a last one appearing in 1906. Thereafter each colony used only its own stamps. The Navigation and Commerce issue is a series of key type stamps issued for the colonial territories of France

French Congo was originally a separate colony, but was joined in 1888 to Gabon and placed under one commissioner-general with a lieutenant-governor presiding in Gabon and another in French Congo. In 1894 the military holdings in Ubangi were attached to French Congo, and in 1900 the Chad military protectorate was added. Postal service was not established in Ubangi or Chad, however, at that time. In 1906 Gabon and Middle Congo were separated and French Congo ceased to exist as such. Chad and Ubangi remained attached to Middle Congo as the joint dependency of “Ubangi-Chari-Chad” and Middle Congo stamps were used there. Issues of the Republic of the Congo are listed under Congo People’s Republic (ex-French). 100 Centimes = 1 Franc. This postage stamp, as a physical objects, is part of a private collection owned by the author of the image
