Romanesque church doorway, Charente Maritime, France
Rome, Roma, The Eternal City, Roma Capitale has a rich history which goes back over 2,500 years. Capital of the Roman Empire, it also became the capital of the Papal States until 1870 and after that capital of the Kingdom of Italy and in 1946 of the Italian Republic. Ruled by popes since the Middle Ages it still accommodates the papal seat and is one of the most visited cities in the world. Apart from the Roman legacy which is everywhere to be seen, it also boasts the rich cultural legacy left by some of the greatest names in Western culture: Michelangelo, Bramante, Botticelli, Bernini, Perugino, Raphael, Ghirlandaio and many others contributed to this heritage.
