. Electric railway review . COMMUTATING-POLE GENERATORS, BOSTON ELE-VATED RAILWAY. Among the comparatively recent improvements made inthe design of direct-current machines, probably none has donemore to mark a distinct advance in the art than the employ-ment of commutating poles. While commutating-pole ma-chines of moderate capacity have been in successful operationfor some time past, it is only recently that this feature has-been applied to large direct-connected engine-driven gen-erators operating under the severe service conditions gen-erally met with in street railway work. The two 2,700-kilowatt commutating-pole railway gen-erators recently installed in the Charlestown and Harvardpower stations of the Boston Elevated Railway Company bythe General Electric Company, present some interesting fea-tures in connection with the design, installation and operationof this type of railway generator. The first of these generators was put in commercial serv-ice on October 10, exactly eight months from receipt of order. Near View of Generator, Showing Commutating Poles. and 21 days in advance of the date specified for is said to have been the quickest delivery on record foran engine-driven unit of this size. These generators are direct connected to Mcintosh &Seymour 4,100-horsepower vertical cross compound enginesand are designed for 575 volts at a speed of 90 revolutionsper minute, but are capable of a wide voltage range at allloads. Although the largest commutating-pole railway gen-erators ever built, at the same time they are of smallerphysical dimensions and occupy less floor space than anymachines of same output and speed previously is interesting to note in this connection that the armaturediameter of these machines is approximately 4V2 feet lessthan the armature diameter of the non-commutating polegenerators of the same output just installed in the Lincolnwharf station of the Boston Elevated Railway. The generators are guaranteed to delive
