Tokyo, Japan. 19th May, 2017. The Sanja Matsuri festival in the Asakusa district takes place every third weekend in May with its procession of sacred altars, the mikoshi, in honor of the three founders of Sensoji Temple. Each mikoshi carries the spirit of a deity who is taken out of the sanctuary for the festival, raised on the shoulders of devotees and volunteers to give his blessing to the community.
