View Through Arched Entrance at Bayards Cove Fort and Canon Port of River Dart, Quay, Riverside Houses & Ferry; Dartmouth, Devon

View looking up river from the arched entrance at Bayards Cove fort Dartmouth, Devon. From the time worn steps and detail of historic fortified wall the cobbled waterside and a lamp post are in the foreground. Beyond are riverside houses and a glimpse of the River Dart, England. Bayard's Cove fort was built at the narrowest part of the River Dart estuary in 1534 to protect the busy port. At ground level are a series of gun ports with commanding views which can be explored today. There would have been steps to an upper walk way, a view point and location to fire muskets at potential marauders. The waterfront setting along the Quay approach to the fort is a very popular location for film makers. The view beyond is that includes the Lower Ferry slipway and moored boats. Views along this West Country estuary are stunning and can be best viewed from the river.
