The natives were in despair, and for thefirst time I learned what tropical rain was like. TheRest Camp Mess was one of the best houses in the town,and it had two stout roofs, each of which was made of arow of palm trunks, covered with good thick layers ofmud ; but the rain which collected on the upper roofdissolved the mud between the palm trunks of bothroofs, and flowed down on the table whilst we wereeating, and made the dinner uneatable. It
