17th-century rock inscription, New Mexico, USA. This inscription was written in Spanish by Panamanian-born Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate (1550-1626) as he was passing through what is now New Mexico in April 1606. Onate led several expeditions north from the Spanish colonies into what is now the USA. Photographed at Inscription Rock (the El Morro National Monument, designated in 1906) in around 1927 by US photographer and ethnologist Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952).
