Exercise Alpine Star is an annual Italian Army hosted, multinational and multi-phased mountain and arctic warfare training exercise. Reconnaissance paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade integrate within select companies of the Italian Army’s Alpini Brigade to learn techniques in traversing, ascending and descending multi-seasonal mountainous environments while teaching tactics, techniques and procedures of Army battle drills to allies. During the summer phase, Exercise Summer Resolve, key training focuses on alpine climbing and repelling while during the winter phase, Exercise Winter Resolve, key training focuses on various types of skiing and ice climbing. This training plays a key role in further developing the relationship, interoperability and mission capabilities of both forces. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance. ( Army photograph by Staff Sgt.
