CiiKiSTMAS-DAY of the year 18G2 i)assed amid festivitiesthat smoothed the wrinkled face of war and lent a whollypeaceful air to the rival camps at Nashville and before daybreak next morning Rosecrans, having com-pleted all his preparations, put his army in motion amid adrenching rain. It advanced in three columns, and skir-mishing began almost from the start, for Braggs superiorityin cavalry enabled him to confine his adversary almost withinhis infantry lines. Stone River, rising in the high country south of Murfrecs-boro, runs nearly north, passes that town a mile to the west,and empties into the Cuml)erland a few miles above Nash-ville. Bragg placed his force on the west side of thatstream, with his line running nearly west and south, but heprolonged his right flank across the river to the east bank,where one division (that of Breckinridge) held the ap-proaches to ]\[urfreesboro from that side.
