Eggfly Butterfly (Male) Hypolimnas bolina


EGGFLY (Hypolimnas bolina) A butterfly of the family Nymphalidae and found from Madagascar through to South and Southeast Asia, South Pacific Islands and in parts of Australia, Japan and New Zealand. It is found in lightly wooded country, deciduous forests, thick and moist scrub and the greener parts of human habitation. Caterpillar is dark brown or black with orange-yellow spines and a yellow line along the side. It feeds on various tropical plants. The butterfly has a wingspan of 7-11cm. The males wings are jet black, with three pairs of white spots (two on the forewing and one on the hind). Each white spot is surrounded by purple irridescence. The upper side of the hind wing bears a series of small dots. The upper sides of the wings of the female are brownish black and does not have any spots. The edges bear white markings. Butterflies feed on Lantana species.
