Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Aerial view of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) at Los Alamos, formerly known as the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). It is operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, USA. The heart of the installation is a linear accelerator (LINAC) designed to provide a beam of protons of variable energy up to 800 meV (million electron volts) and an average current of one milliampere. LANSCE is used primarily for the study of atomic, nuclear, and elementary physics and nuclear chemistry. It also has important applications in medicine, isotope production, defence science, and the study of the structure of materials. Photographed on 13 February 2015.
