Female brine shrimp and eggs. Female brine shrimp (Artemia sp.) producing its eggs (cluster at rear of shrimp). This shrimp may live for up to three months and produce as many as 300 eggs every four days. The eggs are only 200 micrometres across and the adult shrimp is 10 millimetres in length. The eggs may hatch immediately into larvae, or remain as cysts that can lie dormant until the water conditions trigger larval emergence. Brine shrimp live in hypersaline lakes where the salt content may be as high as 25%. This reduces the number of competitors and predators, and algal production is high. Brine shrimp feed on algae.
