Captain John Smith
English colonist Captain John Smith (1580-1631) was instrumental in guiding the colonists of the settlement of Jamestown in the New World through difficult times. In 1614, he sailed for New England and mapped the area from Penobscot Bay to Cape Cod. In 1615, he sailed again from England to New England, but storms forced him to turn back. He never returned, but was referred to as the Admiral of New England.
