A craftsman (Nirojon Sarkar, Age 55) is busy mending traditional stone grinder, popularly known as Sheel-Pata, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.


Traditional Stone grinder, popularly known as Sheel-Pata. It is a locally famous household object in Bangladesh. It’s still in demand, though electric grinder is being used as kitchen appliance nowadays. Used mainly to grind spices and prepare cook mixes, the home of shil patas is in Shillong. The photo shows a grinder maker man Nirojon Sarkar (Age 55), Mohamed Sohidul (29) and Md. Masum (27) in Buriganga River area in Dhaka city. These tiny industries of stone cutters are finding themselves in an increasingly difficult situation as the industry thins out from lack of demand. Bangladesh is not abundant in stones, so the products travel to places where people can pay more. Nirojon Sarkar working in industry is 17 years as long times. In this situation traditional Stone grinder (Sheel-Pata) is very rare objects.
