Atomium, Brussels, Belgium. The Atomium was designed by architect Andre Waterkeyn for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Made from steel, the structure is 103 metres in height and represents a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It was built to symbolize the knowledge of atomic structure achieved in the 20th century. Originally only built to last for six months, it has now become a popular tourist attraction with visitors ascending to the spheres for panoramic views of Brussels.
