Brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea) and a pack of black- backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) scavenging on a carcass. The brown hyena is largely solitary and is extremely shy. It is almost completely nocturnal, typically hunting small prey such as hares or scavenging on the carcasses of larger animals, as seen here. Originally found throughout southern Africa, the brown hyena has become increasingly rare due to culling by farmers who believe, wrongly, that it is responsible for cattle losses. The black-backed jackal is another common scavenger found throughout southern and eastern Africa. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, South Africa.
