When the subject of tiiissketch was about six months old,his parents emigrated with him toTennessee, where many of theirrelatives had already located, at the base of theCopper Ridge Mountain, about 14 miles northeast ofthe present city of Knoxville. There they were ex-posed to Indian depredations, and were much molest-ed by them. In 1794 they moved into the interiorof the State. They were poor, and brought up theirchildren to habits of manual industry. In 1800 the family removed to Kaskaskia, 111., witheight horses and two wagons, encountering manyHardships on the way.
