Costume of a servant of Carentan. The only remarkable thing about her clothes is the square ends of the papillon (butterfly) wings of her bonnet. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
