The Heaviest Beetroot at the Harrogate Autumn Show has been awarded to Ian Neale at 21lb 6oz. A record number of growers from all over the country spend their spring and summer carefully nurturing their giant veg, ready for the battle of the bulge at this September event. There are 12 classes of marvelous monsters, including marrows, pumpkins, parsnips, carrots, leeks, beetroot, runner beans, tomatoes and potatoes. Harrogate is also famous for its national championships and the annual weigh-in trying to beat the world record. The National Vegetable Championships are held at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in North Yorkshire with more than 100 entrants competing in 26 classes – including giant vegetables, some of them incredibly large, which are judged on weight alone.
