The next move was asudden one; for on the evening of Feb. 5, 1873, a ^re broke out in the lowerpart of the building (which was rented for mercantile purposes), and ragedall night, destroying all the rear and much of the front part of the companys safes, and most of its books and papers, were preserved ; andbusiness was transacted, with but little interruption, in temporary quartersin the Hampden House Block on Court Street. By December of the sameyear the companys own building had been rebuilt, re-arranged, and im-. The lofty brown-stone front and ironmansard roof form a handsome and conspicuous feature of the street: whilethe Masonic lodges and other organizations that occupy the floors overthe companys offices, and the stores that are on the ground floor, make theinside of the building familiar to a great number of people. It will probably be a surprise to many, even of its neighbors, to knowthat the business of the Massachusetts Mutual at the home office givesconstant employment to three officers and fifteen clerks, besides janitor,real-estate man, and the local agency force ; while, in nearlv all the NorthernStates it has a force of agents at work securing new business.
