Cariuswas in charge of this parish. He wasa Frenchman of deep learning, whohad traveled much, and was then inthe autumn of life. His first chargesin America were in the South, and hewas at New Orleans when the CivilWar broke out. From there he wentinto the Confederate Army as chaplain,and with the exception of some twoyears that he was stationed in chargeof a parish in Texas, he stayed withthe Confederate forces until the closeof the war. In 1866, he got the ap-pointment of chaplain in the UnitedStates Army, and served at differentplaces until about 1868, or 1869. Justwhen he came to this diocese is notknown to the writer, but his advent to Paola was soon after the presi-dential election of 1880. In looking after his priestly duties he was very industrious, promptand devout. The dwelling was old and lacked the ordinary comfortsnecessary to a man of his age and habits and the pay of the parish priestswas small. He had been accustomed to more money, and it was hard for.
