Peter Buseck, US chemist, photographed in his office with models of various fullerenes. Buseck discovered quantities of natural C60 fullerenes in a sample of shungite, a 600 million year old sedimentary rock from Karelia, Russia. The mechanism for the formation of fullerenes in the rock is, as yet, unknown. Man-made fullerene samples are produced from graphite at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere. Buseck works at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Arizona State University, USA. Photographed in 1994.
