The Massachusetts State House (also known as the Massachusetts Statehouse and New State House) with its gold dome glistening in the afternoon sun took several years to build and was completed in 1798 (1795-98). The structure, built in the Federal architectural style and rests in the Beacon Hill neighborhood on land once owned by the commonwealth's first governor, John Hancock. The building is located within the Beacon Hill Historic District, is a Historic Landmark and also listed on the Register of Historic Places.
