Marble memorial to 17th century Dutch naval hero, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607 - 1676), by Flemish sculptor, Rombout Verhulst (1624 - 1698), in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, Netherlands. De Ruyter, who won great victories during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, is still revered in the Netherlands today and referred to as Bestevaêr (Middle Dutch for “grandfather").

Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands: marble monument by Flemish sculptor, Rombout Verhulst (1624 - 1698), of Dutch naval hero, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607 - 1676), at the east end of the Choir in the Nieuwe Kerk in Dam Square. Admiral Michiel de Ruyter was killed by a French cannon ball at the Battle of Agosta, off Sicily, in 1676 after winning many naval engagements in the Anglo-Dutch Wars. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–67), his greatest victories were in the Four Days’ Battle (June 1666) and in the raid on the Medway (June 1667), in which much of the English fleet was destroyed. De Ruyter’s performance in the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672–74) has been considered his greatest achievement: his victories over larger Anglo-French forces off Solebay (1672) and Ostend and Kijkduin (1673) prevented an invasion of the Dutch Republic from the sea. In 1675–76 he fought against the French in the Mediterranean and was mortally wounded. De Ruyter is still revered in the Netherlands today and still referred to as Bestevaêr (Middle Dutch for “grandfather”). Rombout Verhulst, a native of Malines in Belgium, worked for many years in the Northern Netherlands. Between 1654 and 1663, he worked for Flemish sculptor Artus Quellinus on decorations for Amsterdam’s new town hall, currently a royal palace, on Dam Square.
