Sir Isaac Newton. Engraving of British physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727). Newton's work put physics on a new course, giving mathematical expression to physical phenomena and permanently altering modern thought. As a mathema- tician he discovered the binomial theorem and developed differential and integral calculus. As a physicist he established a uniform system in mechanics with the three laws of motion. His most famous achievement, however, was the formulation of the general theory of gravitation. Newton is less well known for calculating the year of bibli- cal Creation as 3500 BC and for his vain attempts to work out a recipe for the manufacture of gold.
