Itsancient name was Ben-Edair, the hill of oaks, indicating the luxuriance ofthe woods which crowned it. It was also called Du7i-Crivithan, Crimthansfort, from having been the residence of that monarch, celebrated for his suc-cessful incursions into Britain, and the advantages he there obtained, not onlyover the natives, but some Roman forces in the time of Agricola. The greatportion of the peninsula belongs to the estate of the Earl of Howth, and hasbeen in uninterrupted possession of his ancestors since it was granted to Sir Ar-moricus Tristram, in ii77, for his gallantry in fight Howth Castle.
