Gramophone Used for Cinema Sound. This gramophone was owned by the Norwegian film pioneer and cinema director Hugo Hermansen. Gramophones were used in the earliest cinemas to accompany silent film. Emile Berliner, a German immigrant to the USA competed with Edison on several inventions. He used flat disks instead of cylinders, which was an advantage in the mass production of recordings.
