Some of the distinctive features of the African elephant are indicatedunder the heading of the Indian species. The African elephant, although still abundant in many regions ofCentral Africa, in the southern part of the continent is rapidlyapproaching extinction. A remarkable exception to this process ofextermination is, however, to be found in the south and east of CapeColony, where, since the year 1830, wild elephants have beensystematically preserved by Government. Strong troops of theseprotected elephants still roam the dense and impenetrable jungles ofthe Addo Bush and the Knysna and Zitzikamma forests. Fart
