Queen Lakshmibai or Laxmibai, the Rani of Jhansi (1828-1858) was an Indian queen, the wife of Maharaja Gangadar Rao. She joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857-8, India’s first uprising against the British East India Company. She led her own army against the British and died in the battle of Gwalior in June 1858.
