Itwas easy to suspend the short club over theshoulder, where it was hidden by the mat, sothat when a party of natives came on board,apparently unarmed, having ostentatiouslyleft their patus and other weapons in theircanoes, each man was in fact armed with theweapon that he most trusted. The plan pur-sued was, that the Maories should minglefreely with the crewr, until each man wasclose to one of the sailors. At a signal fromthe chief, the concealed merai was snatchedfrom beneath the mat, and in a moment ithad crashed through the head of the selectedvictim. Even after this ruse was discovered, theingenious Maories contrived to get hold ofmore than one vessel under pretence of ex-hibiting their war dance, which in a momentwas changed from the mimicry of battle intoreality, the warriors leaping among the spec-tators and dealing their blows right and left.
