Dybbol Molle (Danish, read: Dybbøl Mølle), Sonderborg, Denmark. Even though a quite common mill of it’s time it is, however, a very important national historic symbol in this border region to Germany. The mill, situated at the entrenchments Dybbol Banke, was at the center for the very violent wars between Denmark and Germany in 1848-49, which Denmark won, and again in 1864 which Germany and Austria won, leading to a national catastrophe and trauma, where Denmark consequently lost 2/5 of it’s territory and population and was reduced to a statelet. The mill, destroyed during both wars, became both the symbol for Danish political and military stupidity of the time and the symbol for a new national small-state culture which focus on to be Danish. “What is outwards lost, must be inwards taken back” (Enrico Dalgas, 1866) (Danish, read: “Hvad udad tabes, skal indad vindes”). The mill and the nearby for entrenchment functions today as an experience museum about the wars and is still an important national symbol.
