Norton Cuckney, Nottinghamshire, England, UK: a wounded First World War soldier lies dying, his Lee-Enfield British Army standard issue rifle beside him, beneath the feet of the crucified Christ and standing angels welcoming him to Heaven, in the central light of the three-light stained glass memorial window in the medieval Parish Church of St. Mary. Below the window, a brass plaque records the names of 27 men of the village and its surroundings who fell fighting on European battlefields or otherwise died while serving their country between 1914 and 1918. Most of the men commemorated by the window and plaque were members of the former Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), or of the former Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. The two other lights depict St George, patron saint of England, above the badge of the Sherwood Foresters, and St Alban above the badge of the Sherwood Rangers. The church has Norman origins, dating from the 12th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 13th century and then restored in 1667, 1892 and 1907.
