The island is mostly composed of granite, which is gene-rally buried from 10 to 15 feet under ground. The su-perincumbent earth is composed of drift sand and pebbles,with large quantities of oxide of iron, which gives it a redcolour. The rocks crop out, and appear on the surface, inthe upper parts of the island, to a considerable extent. Thesoil for the most part is fertile, but from the abundance ofrocks, hard to cultivate. The island was originally coveredwith a very large growth of wood- The harbour of New-York is safe and commodious, itscircumference being about 25 miles. The largest vesselsmay come up to the wharves. On the Bar at Sandy Hook, the depth of water at hightide is ;^7feet; from thence to the city, the channel isfrom 35 to 50 feet. The inner harbour communicates withthe-outer, or Raritan Bay and the ocean, by the Narrows, a. ENVIRONS. 19 passage between Staten Island and Long Island, and by astrait, called Staten Island sound, or the Kills, which emptyinto Raritan Bay, on the west. There are three islands inthe harbour, namely : Bedlows, Elliss and Governors, allstrongly fortified, and owned by the United Slates govern-ment. United States criminals are hung on Bedlowsisland. Governors island, opposite the Battery, has threeforts, and contains 70 acres. Castle William on the north-west side, is a large round structure, 200 feet in diameter,60 feet high, and mounts three tiers of guns. ENVIRONS OF NEW-YORK.
