The HKW is fired with hard coal and biomass The original Moabit power plant was built from 1899-1901 to plans by Franz Schwechten and the brick façade of the old machine hall with its German Renaissance style gable and arched window has been retained. The power station has been extended and modernized over the years and it dominates the extensive industrial landscape on the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal with a towering modern heating block within an impressive historic power plant
