The cotton export business has increased slowly butsteadily during the last few years. There has been alarge increase in lumber and coal shipments, and in thetropical fruit trade, which has been diverted from NewOrleans on account of more direct shipping facilities tothe interior and because of lower port charges. The city is notonly important from a commercial standpoint, but as awinter health resort it is taking rank with the heretoforemore prominent coast cities. It is quite natural that a stranger visiting the cityshould look for the first evidence of the internal growth, andwe find it strikingly illustrated in her admirable system of ELECTRIC RAILWAYS. These are controlled by three companies, and the twoprincipal systems are as well built and as ably managedas almost any other lines in the country. Mobile Light & Railway Company.
