At places along Chesapeake Bay are found ^kitchen-middens, which are a sign that many years ago there wasan Indian village nearby. All the inhabitants of a village,after eating their oysters, would throw the shells into thesame heap. Year after year the heap grew larger, and intime became covered with earth.
