Macrauchenia, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal lived 7 million to 20,000 years ago (the Late Miocene to the Late Pleistocene). It was a herbivorous browser and was the last of a group of South American hoofed animals known as litopterns. Fossil evidence from skulls suggests that it had a long muscular proboscis on its face. Macrauchenia was an extremely agile runner, able to twist and turn to avoid predators. It stood metres tall at the shoulder.
