Accordingly,a committee of thirty, composed of the most prominentcitizens, was chosen to draw up a charter of incorporation,which they did and presented at a town meeting March14th, 1709, b^it upon being put to a vote it was rejected. In1784 the same matter was again brought to the front, andin June, at a meeting of the town, it was again defeated bya large majority. In 1815 the question of incorporation againwas considered by the people, the debate was acrimoniousin the extreme, and after long consideration it
