Nerve Supply.—The first or medial lumbricale, medial plantarnerve (L. 4, 5, S. i); the other three, lateral plantar nerve (S. i, 3). The m. quadratus plantse or accessorius, arises from the lateralmargin of the plantar ligament and the adjacent portion of the plan-tar surface of the calcaneus; a medial head arises from the medialmargin of the long plantar ligament and from the medial surface ofthe calcaneus. Its flattened tendon is inserted into the tendons ofthe flexor digitorum longus (mainly for the second, third and fourthtoes). Actions.—Assists in flexing the toes and draws the long tendonsinto the middle of the sole of the foot. Nerve Supply.—^Lateral plantar nerve (S. i, 2). The tendons of the mm. flexor hallucis longus and flexor digitorumlongus are included in this layer. Third Layer.—The m. flexor hallucis brevis arises from the tendon THE MUSCLES OF THE FOOT 209 of the tibialis posterior and the plantar surfa
