Belladia 31909, owned by Walter H. Dupee, Edgemoor farm, Santee ,Cal, has completed a record of 19, pounds if milk and pounds of butter fat in one year. This perform- ance entitles her to seventh place in the aged cow group of the class lead- ers in the production of butter fat, and fifth place in the production of milk. She takes first place in the state of California ,exceeding the previous high record by ISO pounds of fat. She is also the highest producer west of the Mississippi. The production of milk and butter fat by this cow, month by month, is very uniform. Only three times did she exceed the requirements for a re- test- She received, however, four re- tests, three by California testers and one by Prof. W. M. Regan of the Ne- vada agricultural experiment station. In all of them she gave satisfactory results. New Way of Handling Blackleg. Blackleg in calves seems to have be- come more virulent of late. Vaccina- tion will prevent the disease in most cases but not all. Another difficulty lies in the fact that after administer- ing the vaccine, calves are not protect- ed' against the disease for a period of about two weeks, and in the meantime, if the herd is affected, many of them may die. There is now a blackleg serum on the market which will give immediate protection and combined with the virus will give lasting immu- nity.
