Closeup of the gibbet outside The Prospect of Whitby public house on the banks of the River Thames at Wapping, London, E1, England,

Originally named The Pelican and later The Devils Tavern, for its grusome reputation. The gibbet at The Prospect of Whitby is a reconstruction of all that remains of Execution Dock. John Stow said it was ‘The usual place for hanging of pirates and sea-rovers, at the low-water mark, and there to remain till three tides had overflowed them’. Judge Jeffreys, the ‘hanging judge’, is said to have dined and drank here in the 17th century, whilst watching the hangings.
